Hello, my friend! How are you? If you're out of time or "in a rush", go to the last paragraph of this text for a fast answer.
In times of immediate responses and connection 24 hours a day, talking about long-term transformation is a risk! But… we believe you can (and must!) dream big, and make a daily effort to get better every day. This is our mission - seeing you speaking English and being a Leader wherever you go. "The 5 Essential People Skills" was written by Dale Carnegie and its goal is to improve your people skills. In other words, to improve your relationships at work and at home.
Chapter 13 talks about assertive ambition, which is the desire to achieve something that is desired or planned. But there's a very common problem taking our ambition away from us: fear. "The one word that always pulls the plug on motivation and achievement is fear", says Dale Carnegie. Let's see 4 ways fear comes to us:
1- Insecurity: the fear of recognizing who you are. To deal with it: get to know yourself, understand your strengths and weaknesses. Develop your strengths.
2- Impatience: the fear of taking the time to develop your abilities. To deal with it: insist, persist, dedicate your time and energy to develop yourself instead of running from it.
3- Pressure: the fear of taking on more responsibility. To deal with it: say "no" to things you can't handle - that's the difference between aggressive and assertive ambition.
4- Limits: the fear of showing your limits. To deal with it: admit your limits and be clear about them. That doesn't mean you're not ambitious.
Get to know yourself, dedicate time to develop your strengths, learn to say "no" and set limits. When you do it your ambition is aligned to yourself and it doesn't hurt you. Aggressive ambition is not sustainable, my friend. Who's the most ambitious person you know? Comment here and see you next class!
